Find out&nbsp;<strong>how to obtain the environmental identification number<\/strong>&nbsp;in this article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is&nbsp;the environmental identification number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Many industrial processes are required by law to operate in accordance with environmental permits that place conditions on their operation in order to minimise the release of pollutants. Therefore,<strong>&nbsp;you may need to apply to the Environment Agency for an environmental permit if your business uses, recycles, treats, stores or disposes of waste or mining waste in the UK<\/strong>. This permit can be for activities at one site or for mobile plant that can be used at many sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are carrying out a waste activity, you can meet the permit requirement using one of the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>A \u2018regulatory position statement\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 the Environment Agency does not currently require a permit for that activity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>An \u2018exemption\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 you do not need a permit for the activity, but you must still register your exemption with the Environment Agency.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A \u2018standard rules permit\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 a set of fixed rules for common activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>A \u2018bespoke permit\u2019<\/strong>&nbsp;\u2013 tailored to your business activities.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>There is separate guidance on how to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/register-renew-waste-carrier-broker-dealer-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">register as a waste carrier<\/a>&nbsp;if you are a waste transporter, buyer, seller, broker or dealer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to obtain the environmental identification number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Only a person who has control over the operation of a regulated activity<\/strong>&nbsp;may obtain or hold an environmental permit. This person is the \u201coperator\u201d. A permit application may be made by an agent on behalf of the operator.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apply for a standard permit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/apply-for-a-standard-rules-environmental-permit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">apply online for most standard rules environmental permits<\/a><\/strong>. Before you submit your permit application, you must check your site meets the standard rules location criteria. You can&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/get-advice-before-you-apply-for-an-environmental-permit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">contact the pre-application advice service<\/a>&nbsp;to request a heritage and nature conservation screening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apply for a bespoke permit<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You must apply for a bespoke permit if your operation does not fit the conditions<\/strong>&nbsp;of a standard rules permit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Before you apply<\/strong>&nbsp;you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check you meet the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/legal-operator-and-competence-requirements-environmental-permits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legal operator and competency requirements<\/a>&nbsp;(including technical competency).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/develop-a-management-system-environmental-permits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">management system<\/a>&nbsp;(a written set of procedures that identifies and minimises the risks of pollution).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/risk-assessments-for-your-environmental-permit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">risk assessment<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Design your facility to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/control-and-monitor-emissions-for-your-environmental-permit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">avoid and control emissions<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Check the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/technical-guidance-for-regulated-industry-sectors-environmental-permitting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">technical guidance<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are applying for a waste recovery permit to permanently deposit waste on land, you must also read the guidance on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/deposit-for-recovery-operators-environmental-permits\/waste-recovery-plans-and-deposit-for-recovery-permits\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">waste recovery plans and deposit for recovery permits<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We hope this post about\u00a0<strong>Environmental permits and how to obtain it in the UK<\/strong>\u00a0has clarified some concepts for you.
