By combining these elements, they result in another material with better properties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time, we are going to see&nbsp;<strong>what light alloys are<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a light alloy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Light alloys are usually those whose main or base element is&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scrapad.com\/en\/materials\/aluminium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">aluminium<\/a><\/strong>, although titanium is also used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are considered&nbsp;<strong>light metals<\/strong>, as their relative density is less than 4.5, so they have similar hardness characteristics to others such as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scrapad.com\/en\/materials\/iron-steel\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">steel<\/a>, but their weight and density are lower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Most common light alloys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aluminium light alloys<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned above, they are made from aluminium, together with other elements such as zinc,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scrapad.com\/en\/materials\/copper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">copper<\/a>, manganese or silicon, although their proportion never exceeds 15%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is true that steel has greater mechanical performance, and it is worth noting its&nbsp;<strong>extraordinary strength<\/strong>, although aluminium suffers at high temperatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The properties they boast are&nbsp;<strong>low density, corrosion resistance, ductility, malleability and easy recycling<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among its applications, it has a major impact in the&nbsp;<strong>automotive industry<\/strong>&nbsp;for the manufacture of wheels, seat parts and bodywork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/scrapad.com\/en\/blog\/types-of-aluminum\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/scrapad.com\/en\/blog\/types-of-aluminum\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">types of aluminium alloys<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Aluminium and silicon<\/strong>: silicon is combined with aluminium to harden the metal and increase its overall strength. In this case, aluminium is the base and 5-20% silicon is used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aluminium and magnesium<\/strong>: this alloy has a magnesium content of no more than 10%, resulting in a metal with excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistant and lightweight.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Aluminium and copper<\/strong>: as with silicon, copper is added for hardening and heat resistance. This results in a metal that is strong, hard and light.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Titanium light alloys<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned above, we also obtain&nbsp;<strong>light alloys based on titanium<\/strong>, which is a fairly light, durable and corrosion-resistant metal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Titanium alloys are typically used in the&nbsp;<strong>aerospace and marine industries<\/strong>. However, being a more difficult material to extract and process, they are significantly more expensive compared to aluminium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ultra-light alloys<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultralight alloys are those&nbsp;<strong>based on magnesium<\/strong>&nbsp;and, to a lesser extent,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/scrapad.com\/en\/materials\/zinc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">zinc<\/a>&nbsp;or aluminium. This results in&nbsp;<strong>alloys that weigh about five times less<\/strong>&nbsp;than steel.
