At the heart of the discussion were efforts to counter proposed <strong>EU export restrictions on recycled steel<\/strong> and to unveil a new <strong>BIR\/KPMG study<\/strong> that underscores recycling\u2019s powerful contribution to global environmental goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcc9 <strong>Restrictions on recycled steel? Industry responds with data<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the hottest topics was the European proposal to restrict exports of recycled steel, based on questionable arguments that the industry dismantled with solid evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Olivier Fran\u00e7ois, president of the IEC and EuRIC, explained that Europe produces 100 million tons of recycled steel annually and consumes approximately 80 million tons domestically, so the 20 million tons exported do not compromise internal availability. He also refuted the idea that Europe only exports its highest-quality steel, citing customs statistics showing that 70% of exports correspond to lower grades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was emphasized that imposing tariffs or restrictions would create market imbalances, affecting recyclers, municipalities, automobile manufacturers, and the circular ecosystem in general. Complex materials like car bodies would stop being recycled, causing more waste accumulation and higher logistical costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udcda <strong>A Game-Changing study: BIR + KPMG<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>During the session, a preview was presented of the study \u201cEnvironmental Benefits of Recycling,\u201d prepared by KPMG France and jointly funded with BIR. This research \u2014 nearing completion \u2014 has greater ambition than previous editions (2008 and 2016), covering 10 recycled materials and expanding key environmental performance indicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The evaluated indicators include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduction of CO\u2082 emissions<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy savings<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduction in water consumption<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decreased use of virgin raw materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Impact on land use and the ozone layer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This report is based on real market data and is designed to support political, regulatory, and business decisions with scientific, verifiable, and globally applicable information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\ud83d\udd01 <strong>Circular economy and climate: An integration still pending<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A cross-cutting idea during the session was the need to closely link the circular economy with decarbonization. Robin Wiener, president of the U.S. Association of Recycled Materials, pointed out that the arguments Europe faces are similar to those circulating in North America regarding recycled copper. International cooperation among recycling associations is therefore crucial to counter protectionist policies and defend free trade of recycled materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Valencia meeting made it clear that recycling is more than an economic activity: it is a strategic environmental tool to meet global climate goals.
